Umbria & the Marche: Undiscovered Italy
 8 days / 7 nights
Day 1-Norcia
Pick up your rental car in Rome and head out to discover something new in Italy. The new Tuscany? Perhaps. But so much more…. Norcia was established 600 years before Rome and the town, enclosed by fully preserved fourteenth century walls, offers a wealth of historic and artistic treasures. Stay for four nights in a restored 16th century Umbrian palace in the heart of the town.

Day 2-Sibillini National Park
Spend the day touring the most picturesque part of Umbria. The national park ringed by the Sibillini mountains was known in the 15th century as the land of fairies and mysteries. Today you can visit ancient fortresses and enjoy spectacular panoramas as you wander the scenic routes.. Leave some time to explore Norcia’s Basilica and imposing 16th century fortress. The town is famed for its pork sausages, delicious lentils and exquisite truffles.

Day 3-Assisi
Beautifully situated on a hill covered with olive groves and cypresses, the mystical city of St. Francis still captivates with a special peace. Visit the magnificent double basilica to marvel at the frescoes and stroll the austere medieval streets of Assisi.

Day 4-Montefalco / Spoleto
In Montefalco visit the town’s museum and shop for linen, a traditional handicraft. Visit an ancient olive oil mill for a tour and a light lunch of local specialties selected to match the mill’s oil. Continue this afternoon to visit Spoleto; visit the Roman Theatre and the Romanesque Cathedral and enjoy strolling in the elegant city centre.

Day 5-Borgo Seghetti Panichi
Today’s drive takes you across the Sibillini mountains into the Marche, a land of hills and sea with the greatest density of museums in Italy! Your hotel for three nights is in a ancient village built around a medieval fortress, transformed in the 1700s.

Day 6-Ascoli Piceno
Known as ‘little Siena’ this city of travertine and a hundred towers is famed for the harmony and elegance of its medieval and Renaissance buildings. Don’t miss the main square surrounded by imposing buildings sheltered by elegant arcades and the grand
main street lined with old palaces. Sample local wine and food during your wine tasting today at Filippo Panichi Wine Cellar, part of the borgo, followed by a tour of the premises.

Day 7-The Sea
A day exploring the seaside is a wonderful way to relax. The coastline here is known as the ‘Palm Riviera’. On your way back, don’t miss the splendid setting of the hilltop town of Civitella del Tronto with its picturesque winding streets leading to the spectacular 16th century fortress.

Day 8-Departure
Your stay in the Marche concludes after breakfast this morning. Drive to the airport at Pescara or travel up the Adriatic coast to Venice.
